Education Philosophy

The education philosophy and objectives are laid out as follows in Section One of the Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies’ school regulations.

First Article: This school, as a university that prescribes its teaching method following the Fundamental Law of Education, teaches and researches knowledge related to foreign languages and international cultures based on the spirit of Christianity. Upon cultivating international perspectives and a well-rounded character, it is then our goal to foster people who will be able to contribute to the happiness and development of both local communities and human society.

Second Article: At our school, we have classes relating to Christianity as well as hold religious (worship) services as the foundation of our research and teaching academic studies. To achieve these goals for our university, we stipulate below our teaching and research objectives for our international language department, contemporary English language department, and our international communications department, as well as goals for human resource development.

  1. The foreign languages department hones flexible thinking skills and sensitivity towards different cultures, and instills international education and practical foreign language skills. Through this, we aim to cultivate human resources who can, as a citizen of earth, proactively address issues in local communities and international societies.
  2. The contemporary English department, through practical English skill cultivation and multi-cultural and economic possibilities in a global world, pursues significance and instills rich education (culture) and professionalism. As citizens of the Earth, it is our goal to instill in our students the ability to tackle many issues independently in an international society.
  3. The International Communications department studies the languages, society, and cultures of Europe and the cultural region of the EU centering around Germany, France, Europe, as well as the cultural region of Asia, centering around China, Korea, and Japan. Through the pursuit of the many possibilities and meaning of multicultural coexistence, we aim to cultivate human resources who can, as a citizen of earth, proactively address issues in local communities and international societies.

Contemporary English Department Education Goals

One of the biggest trends in the 21st century is globalism. (National) Borders are losing their meaning in the world economy. The means of communication that makes up the foundation of this trend is the regarding of “English as an international language.” The Contemporary English Department sets its sights there and pursues the polishing 練磨 of advanced and practical English skills and the search for cultural and economic possibilities and meaning in a world of globalism. In order to achieve this objective, we set the following goals.

  1. The cultivation of English communication skills as an international (world) language.
    Master and integrate basic/fundamental skill/ability for English communication (Reading, writing, listening, speaking) and be able to make full use of it in real society, in accordance with my goals.
  2. ?Multicultural and international understanding
    Deepen one’s understanding of not only English speaking countries’ many cultures and societies, but many other foreign countries’ cultures and societies as well.
  3. The acquirement of practical expertise
    Acquire expertise and skills in the areas of “International business”, “air and tourism hospitality”, “interpreting and translation”, and “English professions.”
  4. Improvement of resourcefulness/social grace/confidence
    Through “project” courses, “internship” courses, and “study abroad,” one will combine the knowledge and skills they have acquired. Through the use of those, one will cultivate their communication skills, problem solving abilities, practical abilities, teamwork, and leadership and other abilities deemed necessary in modern society.

International Communications Department Education Goals

The other biggest trend in this 21st century world is localism (the principle of specific areas) or regionalism (the principle of multiple areas) as opposed to globalism. The International Communications Department overcomes the barriers of cultural and political conflicts of countries with differing languages, ethnic groups, religion, and social systems. They set their sights on “Multicultural Coexistence,” how to further coexistence and co-prosperity. The department studies the languages, society, and cultures of Europe and the cultural region of the EU centering around Germany and France, as well as the cultural region of Asia, centering around China and Korea. Furthermore, they work with international students studying Japanese and pursue the many possibilities and meaning of multicultural coexistence. Accordingly, the department aims to cultivate human resources who can be actively involved far and wide in an international society. In order to achieve this objective, we have set the following goals.

  1. Cultivation of international language communication skills
    Master and integrate the fundamental skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) of German, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese (International Students) and be able to make full use of it in real society, accordingly.
  2. Multicultural and International Understanding
    Study European, Asian, and Japanese History, Culture, and Society, and deepen one’s understanding of the many possibilities and significance of the multicultural coexistence.
  3. Improvement of resourcefulness/social grace/confidence
    Through “project” courses, “internship” courses, and “study abroad,” one will combine the edge and skills they have acquired. Through the use of those, one will cultivate their communication skills, problem solving abilities, practical abilities, teamwork, and leadership and other abilities deemed necessary in modern society.
